Born in Honolulu near the small coffee farm of my mother's Japanese-Hawaiian family, we soon crossed the country (and polar extremes of perspective) to my father's home state of ... Alabama!
After years as 'the Asian kid' in Alabama soon after the Vietnam War, moving to Hawaii for my freshman year at Pearl City High School vastly improved my social standing—but also showed me that prejudice is everywhere—it's just the targets that change.
Then after four high school years living with an ocean view among what looked and felt like 'our people,' the higher cost of living meant we once again crossed the country to Alabama (this time feeling the full effects of culture shock)—where I'd attend college and start my career.
